The youth are speaking up and taking a stand against new DACA policies that might jeopardize their chances of remaining in the U.S. Federal judges have ruled against the 2012 DACA program, which got established by former President Obama. If you are one of the DACA recipients, you will be able to maintain your status and re-apply every two years for now. However, the program will not be available for thousands of other applicants in the same situation.
Although many immigrants, visa recipients, and applicants have felt safer under Biden’s presidency, there has been an apparent fear for some time. The DACA program nearly ended in 2017, but the Supreme Court blocked former President Trump’s attempt. So, what changed outside of politics? Outside of the Immigration Courts facing a continuous backlog, many are still unsure.
Biden Plans to Appeal
President Biden will appeal the federal judge’s ruling, according to CNBC News. Last week, he issued a statement calling the decision disappointing and unfortunate as “hundreds of thousands of young immigrants” face an uncertain future.
Who Does DACA Protect?
DACA – Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – is a program that protects the following:
- Younger individuals brought illegally to the U.S. as kids
- Young people with overstayed visas
- Young immigrants that hoped to live, work and remain in the U.S.
Dreamers, individuals who grew up and lived in America for a decade or more, were also protected under DACA. If this recent change has impacted you or a loved one, you should reach out to our immigration law firm in Los Angeles immediately. The Promise to Thousands of DACA Applicants
Right now, there are a lot of changes happening per Immigration laws. Right now, the government declared a halt on any new or pending applications. However, Biden is encouraging Congress to continue protecting everyone covered under the program. According to CNBC News, Biden said the following in his statement:
“Only Congress can ensure a permanent solution by granting a path to citizenship for Dreamers that will provide the certainty and stability that these young people need and deserve.
“I have repeatedly called on Congress to pass the American Dream and Promise Act, and I now renew that call with the greatest urgency.
“It is my fervent hope that through reconciliation or other means, Congress will finally provide security to all Dreamers, who have lived too long in fear,” he said.
